What is an average stock price? ›

Average price is the mean price of an asset or security observed over some period of time. It is calculated by finding the simple arithmetic average of closing prices over a specified time period. When adjusted by trading volume, the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) can be derived on an intraday basis.

For a given period, the average trade price is what buyers pay in total for one share. The volume-weighted average price shall also be referred to as the average traded price. Although it is most often calculated for a single day, it can also be useful for weekly, monthly, or yearly time frames.

Once a company goes public and its shares start trading on a stock exchange, its share price is determined by supply and demand in the market. If there is a high demand for its shares, the price will increase. If the company's future growth potential looks dubious, sellers of the stock can drive down its price.

The stock's price only tells you a company's current value or its market value. So, the price represents how much the stock trades at—or the price agreed upon by a buyer and a seller. The stock's price will climb if there are more buyers than sellers. If there are more sellers than buyers, the price will drop.

Therefore, average Cost is also often called the total cost per unit or the average total cost. For example, if a company produces 1,000 widgets at a total cost of $10,000, the average cost per widget would be $10 ($10,000 ÷ 1,000 widgets). This means that on average, it costs the company $10 to produce each widget.

This strategy involves buying more shares when the price rises above the initial purchase price. This increases the average cost of the shares held but also increases the profit potential. This strategy can be useful when the trader is confident that the price will continue to rise in the future.

The average cost pricing rule is a standardized pricing strategy that regulators impose on certain businesses to limit what those companies are able to charge their consumers for its products or services to a price equal to the costs necessary to create the product or service.

In order to calculate the ASP, divide the total revenue earned from the product by the total number of units sold. This average selling price is usually reported during quarterly financial results and can be considered as accurate as possible given regulation on fraudulent reporting.

At the most fundamental level, supply and demand in the market determine stock price. Price times the number of shares outstanding (market capitalization) is the value of a company.

P/E, P/B, PEG, and dividend yields are four commonly used metrics that can help break down a stock's value and outlook. Any single ratio is too narrowly focused to stand alone, so combining these and other financial ratios gives a more complete picture.
