- Appeals backlog rises as success rates fall for all but PIP

The backlog of benefits appeals is continuing to rise and is now 79% higher than it was a year ago, according to newly released statistics. The success rates for appeals has fallen for all benefits except PIP, which has seen a 1% increase.
The latest tribunal statistics cover the period from October to December 2022.
The success rates for benefits appeals overall was 62%, but this varies according to the benefit involved:
- PIP 69%, up 1%
- DLA 61%, down 5%
- ESA 49%, down 11%
- UC 53%, down 7%
Compared to the same period in 2021, the number of appeals lodged was up by 18%, mainly due to increases in PIP appeals – up 32% - and UC appeals which were up by 5%.
An impressive 68% more appeals were dealt with – up from 19,000 up to 32,000.
But the number of appeals waiting to be heard rose by 79%, and now stands at a total of 67,000.
It is taking an average of 24 weeks from a case being lodged to a decision being made.

I made a claim in oct 2020 after major cancer surgery,mental illness and ddd. I had a hearing booked for last week and they called and adjourned by phone when i was on my way to the court! 4 years!!! At this rate with more cancer now I'll be lucky to be alive by the next hearing. 1 meal a day for 2 years now and occasionally dog biscuits. Ive even had my gas removed and meter as i cant afford £40 standing charge before i even use gas and i cant pay my carer or run my car after april. Top work. Im really happy and taken care of by the country ive served for. Nice

Hi I'm so nervous I suffer with depression and mental health, I have systemic lupus eurythamatosis, liver disease and diabetes 2,I fear the tribunal this Friday,I applied back last November so I have waited a whole year,I am so nervous having to go as I don't like meeting strangers.

I had been on DLA since 2002 when in 2019 they cancelled my high mobility totally when I was move to PIP. it took TWO YEARS of appeals( adjourned 3 times in those 2 years .) I got it back in October 021 but only for 2 years til September 2023. THEN ( in beginning of 2023 i received a letter from PIP saying my assessment is to be take place in"APPROXIMATELY TEN YEARS TIME. when I first lost my mobility pass I was devastated because pensioners cannot use buses before 9.30 am and most of my hospital appointments are before 9am. I was born with a weak brain surgery. It burst when I was 47 in 2002. It left me partially sighted . I am registered partially sighted so I used that instead of mobility pass.. more than one way of skinning a cat!!
