Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card Review (2024)

Earning Rewards

With the Amazon Rewards Visa card, you’ll earn an unlimited 3% cash back in rewards at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

There’s also a welcome bonus of a Amazon.com gift card instantly on card approval.

Redeeming Rewards

Rewards are earned as Amazon Rewards, an Amazon-specific currency with a value of 1 cent per point. Points can be redeemed for cash back as a statement credit or an electronic deposit to a bank account, toward Amazon purchases, for gift cards from a variety of merchants or to book travel.

Most consumers will get maximum flexibility by redeeming rewards as a statement credit or deposit into a bank account, neither of which requires a minimum redemption amount. Gift cards start at 2,500 points ($25) and travel bookings must be done by phone through Chase’s travel agency.

Using your points when checking out at Amazon sacrifices the cash back you’d normally earn by using your card to pay for Amazon purchases.

Amazon Visa Card Rewards Potential

Using data from various government agencies, Forbes Advisor has developed estimates for how much a family in the 70th percentile of income spends annually in various categories. We base our assumptions on a sole proprietor in this income range. The 70th percentile of wage-earning households brings in $107,908 annually and has $32,072 in expenses that can be charged to credit cards. These figures are used to estimate the potential rewards from this credit card.

Our sample household spends $6,322 annually on grocery purchases. If you’re looking at the Amazon Rewards Visa card, you’re likely already a Whole Foods shopper. So we’ll assume that all of annual grocery spending is done either at Whole Foods or on bulk grocery purchases on Amazon.com. That would yield 18,966 Amazon Rewards points for grocery purchases.

Additionally, our baseline household spends $4,610 annually on online shopping. Amazon sells just about everything, so we’ll estimate that all of the shopping is done with Amazon. That’s another 13,830 Amazon Rewards points.

This household has annual average expenses of $1,044 at drugstores, $4,511 at restaurants and $2,850 at gas stations. Earning 2% back on a total of $8,405 in spending yields another 16,810 Amazon Rewards points each year.

Forbes Advisor estimates that you could reasonably expect to be able to charge an additional $12,735 each year on your Amazon card. At 1% back, that would be 12,735 more Amazon Rewards points.

That yields a total of 62,341 Amazon Rewards points for this sample household. That’s worth $623.41 in annual cash back, in addition to the welcome offer earned in the first year. Of course, all households have different shopping patterns, so make sure to look at your own spending patterns to see what kind of rewards your family would earn with the Amazon Rewards Visa card.
