13 things in your house that you could sell right now and make some money

Games Consoles – there’s always a demand for games consoles so if you have any that are sitting around then consider selling them to make some money and clear some space. Check online and see what sort of price the console you have is selling for and make sure that you check how much the games you’re selling go for as there are some rarer games out there that can sell for a good few pounds on their own. If you don’t have any of these games then you might just want to add them to the console and sell it as a bundle.

Old mobile phones – Lots of us have an old mobile phone or two lying around so dig them out and get selling. I have an iPhone 6 that I’m currently using as an MP3 player in my mini as that has an Aux input into the radio and my iPhone 8 doesn’t have the special connector thing that it would need to plug in. I could quite easily sell the phone and spend a fraction of what I get on the connector I need which would be much better so that’s my task for this weekend!

CDs and DVDs – We have stacks of CDs and DVDs from before music moved online with the likes of Apple Music and Amazon Music and before anyone had ever even heard of Netflix. They take up so much space and they’re not exactly pretty so last year sometime we moved them into the garage which means we use them even less. We did sell quite a lot but I think it’s time to get rid of the rest now. We won’t get much at all for most of them but even just freeing up the space they take up would be worth getting rid of them.

Books – Books do sell quite well, especially textbooks so if you have any lying around then you could make a few pounds and clear some space at the same time.

Empty jars– There always seems to be a demand for glass jars of all shapes and sizes so if you have any then it’s worth seeing if you can sell them and if you don’t, start saving yourjars and sell them when you have enough.

Your wedding dress – I know, it’s an emotional piece of your history but it’s not likely that you’re going to wear it again and someone else could love it just as much as you do.

Instruction Manuals – The more obscure the better, people might randomly buy something on the cheap without the instruction manual so they’ll definitely pay a few pounds to be able to use it.

Clothes – I always used to find that kids clothes sold really well, especially in bundles so I used to do a couple of bundles per child every year as they grew out of them. Often kids clothes are still in immaculate condition when they grow out of them so people are willing to pay good money for them.

Anything designer – People will always pay good money for designer goods so if you have anything lying around that you would class as designer that you don’t use then you can make a small fortune from selling them. I have a few designer items but I do use them so they’re not going anywhere right now. If I didn’t use them on a regular basis then they’d be up for sale.

Jewellery – This is a difficult one as to me, my jewellery has sentimental value to me so even if I don’t wear it, I couldn’t get rid of it. My friend, however, has an engagement ring from a previous relationship that she says has no sentimental value. Her ex didn’t want the ring back and her new partner would rather she just got rid of it so she’s planning on selling that. If you have any jewellery that doesn’t have sentimental value then get rid!

Toilet roll tubes – I’m not even joking when I say that people are selling empty toilet roll tubes on eBay. They’re not fetching much though so you’re probably not going to make your fortune.

Furniture – People are all about revamping and shabby chic-ing furniture these days so if you have a nice piece of sturdy furniture, no matter what it’s condition then people will be prepared to take it off your hands.

Everything else – Pretty much anything will sell at a car boot sale so get your boxes packed up and head along to your local car boot sale and sell, sell, sell.

How to sell your unwanted items

There are so many ways you can sell the things I’ve suggested above – lots of things you could take the easy option and sell to your local cash converters / CEX / trade nation or equivalent but these places won’t give you the best price as they need to factor in the fact that they’re selling them on and they need to make a profit.

My favourite options to sell things are Facebook Marketplace and eBay as you’re reaching so many people with one listing. Even taking into account the fact that there’s going to be a small selling fee on eBay and the fact you need to add shipping cost to your items, there’s still a good deal to be had for your buyer whilst a good profit in there for you on most things.

Look at reducing your shipping charges where you can by using a company like Shiply rather than a standard courier or the Royal Mail. You can input the details of what you want shipping, where from and to and even the eBay item number if it’s an eBay sale and you’ll get a number of quotes for your package. In theory, it could work out a lot cheaper because the delivery firm bidding on your job might have a similar job planned already so combining two jobs makes yours even cheaper. They have a network of over 100,000 providers so someone somewhere must be able to give you a great quote!
